Members of the “Sports Veterans” Public Union met with the residents of Shusha.

During his speech at the ceremony dedicated to the sporting results of 2024, the head of our state, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, emphasized that the regular visits of Azerbaijan’s prominent athletes to the liberated territories would be a significant event for children and young people. Responding to this call of the country’s leader, representatives of the sports community, with the initiative and support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, have already visited Shusha twice. On September 13, 2025, the “Sports Veterans” Public Union made another visit to Shusha with a delegation of 38 well-known Azerbaijani sports veterans.

The sports veterans admired the breathtaking view from Jidir Plain, visited the Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque, and toured the “Shusha” fortress. In the central square of Shusha, where the bullet-riddled statues of Azerbaijan’s prominent figures Natavan, Bulbul, and Uzeyir Hajibeyli are located, guests were given information about the statues and the city by employees of the Shusha City State Reserve Department.

As part of the visit, our sports veterans held a meeting with employees of the Shusha City State Reserve Department, residents, and athletes, and took commemorative photos. Songs about Karabakh performed by young Shusha talent Ibrahim Guliyev drew great interest from our athletes.

Our sports veterans left Shusha with rich impressions from their acquaintance with the city and its residents.

The main purpose of these meetings is to provide moral support to our citizens currently living in their native land, and to demonstrate the unifying and inspiring power of sports.
