As part of the year "Shusha – Cultural Capital of the Islamic World 2024," the symposium titled "Islamic Architectural Heritage of the City of Shusha" began its work in the city of Shusha on October 11, 2024. Organized by the Shusha City State Reserve Administration with the support of ICESCO, the symposium will run until October 13 and will be attended by more than 80 architects from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Egypt, the UAE, Tunisia, Kenya, Jordan, Italy, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.
On the first day of the symposium, the Executive Director of the Shusha City State Reserve Administration, Tural Novruzov, along with the reserve's architects, introduced international architects to the historical and architectural monuments, the restored mosques, and the fortress walls of Shusha. The guests received detailed information about the large-scale infrastructure projects currently underway as part of the restoration of Shusha, a city rich in ancient cultural heritage monuments. They were also informed about the urban beautification, construction, and reconstruction efforts, followed by a tour of the city.
At the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered by the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Shusha District, Aydin Karimov, the Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture, Ilgar Isbatov, UNESCO representative Pietro Laureano, and ICESCO representative Bilal Chelebi. They emphasized the uniqueness of Shusha's architecture and noted that this symposium would make a significant contribution to the development of architecture, especially from the perspective of Islamic architectural history and its importance.
The symposium also saw participation from Tural Novruzov, the Executive Director of the Shusha City State Reserve Administration, representatives of the Special Representative Office of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Shusha District, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the State Service for the Protection, Development, and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, and employees of the "Icherisheher" State Historical and Architectural Reserve Administration.
In the following days of the symposium, panel discussions will be held on topics such as "Regeneration of Historical Urban Texture," "The Contemporary Life of Monuments," and "Sustainable Architecture: Materials, Design, and Execution."
