Vagif's tomb was built in the city of Shusha in memory of Molla Panah Vagif, a great personality known for his close affiliation with the rulers of the Karabakh Khanate, the struggle with Aghamohammed Shah Qajar, and the establishment of relations with Georgia and Russia. Vagif also holds a special place in the memory of our people as a great poet. He gained fame as a master of couplets, tajnis and ghazals. The construction of the mausoleum was completed in 1982, and it was officially opened by Heydar Aliyev, the chairman of the Central Committee of the AKP at that time. After the Armenian armed forces occupied the city in 1992, the mausoleum was damaged, the metal mesh cover, the black granite chest and headstone of the poet's grave were stolen, and the bas-relief was broken and trampled. After Shusha’s liberation, the Government of Azerbaijan launched restoration works of the mausoleum to bring it back to its former appearance.
